William Morris, 1834 - London 1896. Despite
his ambition to be a painter and his later reputation as writer,
poet, publisher, political thinker and activist, he is most widely
known as a designer of patterns, in which he combines historical
themes with floral patterns.

Merton Abbey. Woven by John Martin and Gordon Berry in 1912. The
tapestry was inspired by a quotation from Schiller's poem "Würde
der Frauen" (Women's Worth) 1796, which appears in the upper
border: "Honour the Women, they broid and weave heavenly roses
into earthly life." The figures are labeled left to right :
